Road Trips

South of the Border

When I was a little girl, we would drive from Florida to North Carolina to visit my grandparents.  There was one place I can remember I always looked forward to seeing whenever we took these trips…a place that held treasures to behold.

You would begin to see the signs miles away….and sometimes there would be lots of signs all in a row…all of them beckoning you to visit.   I can remember getting so excited as they counted down the miles for you….I was reliving those moments this time as we got closer until we finally saw it…

I had decided we were going to have lunch when we stopped…and we found the perfect place…

…it was quite good, inexpensive and one of the best burgers I have had in a while…

After lunch we walked around the area for a bit…we didn’t have a lot of time to spare so we passed on shopping at the tourist shops but we did want to get a few photographs.

This place has shops, restaurants and even a hotel….plus these curious statues all along the street.  I remember seeing the “Jackalope” postcards when I was a kid ~ I actually thought it was real and what a treat it was to see an actual photograph of such a creature.  When I found out it was a gag of course I played along that I knew all the time.  🙂  There are also some existing animal statues as well…

…albeit oddly dressed as they were.  I’m not sure the reasoning for all these statues…but they are there and there are many.  There was also an arcade area and what appeared to be a tower you could climb although we did not…as I said, our time was limited…and I’m not a fan of heights.

It wasn’t the place I remember visiting as a child….but it was a nice break in the ride home and it did bring back a lot of memories.
