Road Trip ~ Part III ~ Down By The River
Before leaving for South Carolina, I did a little research on the area my parents had moved to. I found Landsford Canal State Park was close by and decided I wanted to check it out during my visit. Here is what the official site of South Carolina State Parks has to say about it….. A broad river, rich history and rare, hardy wildflowers come together at Landsford Canal State Park. Stretched along the Catawba River along the South Carolina fall line, the park is home to the well-preserved remains of the canal system that made the river commercially navigable from 1820 to 1835. Locks, a mill site and the lockkeeper’s home are among the…

Road Trip ~ Part II ~ The New Place
My parents ~ fondly known as Papa and Nina since the grandchildren came along ~ have lived in many places. My father’s work and family circumstances made the many moves necessary. The closest to me was Asheville, North Carolina….the furthest was Saudia Arabia. They have declared this their last move, they have found their dream home. It was built by a custom builder for him and his family. Although it may look quite large……it really isn’t. It is a spacious home….but not overly so. What makes this home so nice is the little amenities they put in that you wouldn’t normally find in a house of this size. They had just moved in and…

Road Trip ~ Part I
While it has been a month since I took my trip to South Carolina, I have yet to post my photos from the trip as I promised. I thought I should break it up into different posts because there are quite a few photos I would like to share with you. When I planned the trip, I decided I wanted to take a road less traveled to the interstate. Well, actually the road is a four lane route and fairly well traveled, but it takes you through Suffolk, Franklin and Emporia. There are a few other smaller towns in between these that require you to slow down to 35 mph when…

Oh Danny Boy
**Update** ~ Danny fizzled before creating any problems for us. Life is good! No, I’m not going to sing for you today ~ just lamenting the fact there is another storm out in the Atlantic….and this one is tracking a little bit closer than the last one. We are located at the bottom of the “M” in the word Sat AM on the map below. It will be another rough weekend at the beach…….more strong waves and rip currents I’m sure.

Red Pepper Risotto
I mentioned I was going to make a new dish for dinner the other night….Red Pepper Risotto. I have often mentioned making new things and thought maybe I would actually start following it up with a recipe….if I like it ~ I wouldn’t subject you to something I may have scrapped into the trash! And bonus……..I took the time to take some photos so there are visual aids. 🙂 I found the recipe at The Pioneer Woman’s site……it is quite tasty. The recipe is hers, the photos are mine. Red Pepper Risotto 8 cups chicken broth (low sodium if you’re buying it in the store) 3 tablespoons olive oil 1/2 medium…

Dodged A Bullet
Looks as if the East Coast dodged a bullet this weekend……Hurricane Bill is forecasted to pass between the United States and Bermuda. Thanks to a front that is moving east, it is not expected to make landfall anywhere in the US. The only impact we will probably have will be increased wave action and rip currents if it stays on this course. Here’s hoping that front continues moving east and doesn’t stall ~ otherwise, it could get dicey folks!!

My Precious………
Each year the College of William and Mary holds a Benefit’s Fair…….no rides, no popcorn, no farm animals……just a bunch of vendors who want us to “sign up” with them. You probably know the drill ~ sign up with our bank today and you get an extra $50 deposited in your account…….or why not start your retirement program…….life insurance anyone……..do you currently have the extended health care package. Mostly I go for the free stuff they always bring ~ and of course the door prizes. I did win a cookbook one year ~ the same one they gave out to everyone who attended for free the year before. I have yet…

Greetings From Catawba, South Carolina
I woke early this morning so I could enjoy the beauty of a Catawba sunrise….as reddish orange as the clay that blankets the land. This is a beautiful location……serene and quiet. I’m relaxing on the spacious back porch of my father’s house. …….hummingbirds ……. and an American Goldfinch……. Morning coffee with the folks…….relaxing……..visiting……enjoying life right now.

Catawba, South Carolina
I’m online this afternoon Googling Catawba, South Carolina for our upcoming trip. My father and step-mother have just moved to this area, and while I know it is relatively close to Charlotte, North Carolina…..and they have a new home to explore….that is about all I know about it. I have never spent much time in South Carolina…..generally driving through it to go somewhere else….so this will be a new experience for me. I have discovered the Catawba Indian Nation is in Catawba. Isn’t that convenient since their names are the same! 🙂 It is home to a group of Native American potters…..in fact one that has supposedly survived for…
