    Biltmore House

During my vacation last month, I had the chance to visit the Biltmore House in Asheville, North Carolina.  I shared this view of the house with you when I posted about the Blue Ridge Parkway a few days ago.  While it may appear that we are quite close to the house, we are actually quite far away.   Yes, it is that  large! The Biltmore House is the largest privately owned home in the United States at 175,000 square feet with 250 rooms….and it is a wonder to behold!     One of the first of many intense storms in early April blew through Asheville the night before.  We were awaken in the wee hours with rain, thunder and howling…

    Blue Ridge Parkway

I had the opportunity to travel into the Blue Ridge Mountains via the Blue Ridge Parkway during my vacation last month.  We left my parents home in Catawba, South Carolina and headed west to the Forest Heritage Scenic Byway just outside of Brevard, North Carolina.  Our first destination….Looking Glass Falls.   I featured a photograph of the falls last week with my daughter and her friend…the above photograph was another favorite of mine.    As I took my photographs, the girls took the time to take their own as well. After we enjoyed our time at the falls, we headed up the byway to the Blue Ridge Parkway.  This parkway has always been a favorite of mine….riding the tops…

    Outside My Window ~ 5.1.2011

Outside My Window…is another Sunday winding down as the sun sets and the light fades.  At 7:20 this evening, the temperature is 62°F with very low humidity.  When I went outside early this morning it was quite cool ~ probably about 50°F although I didn’t verify that, just my best guess.  Our high here was 70°F…but I wasn’t here to experience the day,  I spent my day in Shawboro, North Carolina where it was equally as gorgeous.  I am glad…I took the trip to the little town of Shawboro today.  This was the first Sunday in May, the day the Sanderlin family reunion is held each year.  I’m not certain how many years they have…

    The End

I captured this image at sunset…looking south.  I believe this was the back end of the cold front that set off all of the horrible thunderstorms that produced so many tornadoes in the south.  There were still some dark clouds around here and there but for the most part, the storms have moved off the coast.  The line of storms still looks quite strong off the coast….this was one for the history books.  Oddly enough, you couldn’t see the setting sun, it was blocked by cloud cover.  These clouds must have been high enough to catch the last gasp of golden color.

    Outside My Window ~ 4.24.11

Outside my window…the end of a beautiful, albeit very hot day.  Very hot.  At 7:00 in the evening it is 85°F as the sun is setting.  I think our high was close to 90°F.  That is too hot for Easter in my opinion…this is mid summer hot, not near the end of April hot.  I don’t want to go from winter to summer…please. I am thinking…that it was a nice day…a nice dinner…and now a nice evening.  The entire weekend has been very nice.  And because it has been a nice weekend and turning into a nice evening….this is going to be short and sweet. From my kitchen…today it was potato salad…

    Something New

I visited a unique little store during my recent trip to South Carolina earlier this month.  I was in search of a round butter dish that would hold the wonderful butter I pick up at a local store while I’m there.  Previously I had been using a small, round Tupperware container…I wanted something different…I wanted pottery.  Nina knew of a place that wasn’t too far from where we buy the butter however she had never been.  We decided to check it out one morning. Blue Rose Polish Pottery  is a small retail warehouse tucked away in a small industrial type area not too far off Interstate 77 in Fort Mill, South Carolina ~ just south of Charlotte, North…

    Oh Yea…

My first loaf of bread machine bread…Rosemary and Olive Oil. I meant to take this earlier in the day using natural light rather than kitchen light. But this will have to do.  The bread machine…fabulous.  I decided to make the 2 pound loaf…larger than I expected! The finished product was wonderful….it smelled heavenly as it cooked… …and was oh so tasty when I sampled it. Especially slathered with fresh butter…yum!  😉

    Outside My Window ~ 4.17.11

Outside My Window…is bright blue skies….lots of sunshine….some wind….and about 59°F at 11:15 a.m. this fine Sunday morning.  Our forecast high is 67°F with lots of sunshine and wind.  That is to be expected after a cold front moves through the area I suppose..the wind.  Yesterday was quite different ~ I woke up to cloudy skies, the kind that are dark and heavy and move quietly over you.  I don’t believe the sun made an appearance at all yesterday.  Later, the television began a series of warning alerts with advisories that we had severe thunderstorms and possible tornadoes moving our way.  As the sun set, the alerts came more often…the skies…
