    Bumbly Bees & Sunflowers

I love sunflowers.  I love watching them as they grow from alien looking buds to big, beautiful yellow flowers.  I baby them as they grow….keeping the area around the roots weed free….making sure they have enough water.  Our drought has been hard on them this year but they seem to be doing alright.  Maybe not as large as last year, but doing well all the same. This is my second year growing sunflowers.  Last year I discovered The Great Sunflower Project.  A project led by Gretchen LeBuhn, an associate professor at San Francisco State University, they are looking at bee populations.  From their site ~ What scientists had not studied on a large…

    Here Comes the Sun

Here comes the sun, here comes the sun And I say it’s all right Little darling, it’s been a long cold lonely winter Little darling, it feels like years since it’s been here Here comes the sun, here comes the sun And I say it’s all right Little darling, the smiles returning to their faces Little darling, it seems like it’s years since it’s been here Here comes the sun, here comes the sun And I say it’s all right                                                                ~ George Harrison

    It’s That Time Again

If you have been visiting here for a while, you may remember I participated in The Great Sunflower Project last year.  In case you haven’t, the idea behind this project is by San Francisco State University is to gather data on urban, rural and suburban bee populations.  To participate, plant a certain type of sunflower plant and count the bees that visit during a specific amount of time.  I know…..yawn ~ how exciting.  But actually, it isn’t so bad.  Take a cold beverage and sit outside while you view and count ~ I can think of worse way to spend a day.  🙂 Because of increased participation, they have asked that you purchase your seeds…

    Outside My Window ~ 3.14.10

Outside My Window…is a cloudy and dark evening.  I’m a bit late today but thought I would change it up some and do one in the evening.  I was on a roll this morning, the weather was decent and I took advantage of it to get some things done outside.  Of course, we have had rain since Thursday so it was pretty wet but I did manage to get a few weeds pulled.  Most of my outside time was spent cleaning out the shed.  I had made a note to do that as soon as possible ever since the night I had to go check a breaker and almost couldn’t…

    Outside My Window ~ 8.23.09

Outside My Window…is a decent morning.  Temps are 81F with 68% humidity at 11:00 this morning.  Yes, it is quite toasty and muggy outside.  What was beautiful, blue, sun shiny skies is now filling with clouds.  We are forecasted today to have thunderstorms this afternoon.  This is pretty typical weather for this time of year actually.  Yesterday afternoon we had an enormous amount of rain from the front that passed through….the same one that kept Hurricane Bill away from the coast. I am thinking…about my things to do list…….and how grateful I am that Alanna remembered the time she got caught in a rip current when we were at Nags…

    Outside My Window ~ 8.16.09

Outside My Window…is a nice morning……sun is shining….a slight breeze…..81F with 68% humidity.  Yea, I’m wishing the humidity wasn’t that high.  Wow, I just saw on the weather channel we have had almost 4 inches of rain so far this month…and I have noticed the tropics are picking up ~ three now.  We are heading into the real hurricane season now.  It officially starts on June 1st, but things usually won’t get interesting until mid August and they can get even more interesting as we approach mid September.  It is perfect weather for storms to blossom in the ocean. For people who live near the east or gulf coast, the…

Red, White, Blue with a little bit of Yellow & Orange

Yippy Skippy….my largest tomato finally started turning red today!  I was beginning to wonder if it was ever going to turn and at the same time deciding if there was such a thing as a healthy fried green tomato.  We had another round of thunderstorms this afternoon and as I often do when I get home from work after a round of storms, I check to see if “everyone” survived in the garden.  I was thrilled to see this flash of red on an otherwise green bush! I applied CoffeeShop Vivid Action on this photo……yes, I’m still having way too much fun with these actions.  For my white selection, I have a…

    Sunflowers ~ CoffeeShop Orton Style

I was trying out some different CoffeeShop Actions today during my lunch hour and came up with this…….. I took this photo this morning as the sun was cresting over the rooftops.  The sunflowers were heavy with the rain from last night, and there were a few more new blooms.  I created this effect using the CoffeeShop Orton action for PhotoShop Elements.   I like the way it softens the image.  The actions are very easy to use, and I like how Rita has designed it so you have the ability to adjust levels if you so desire.   I’m having too much fun with these…. and so much more to explore.

    Outside My Window ~ 7.19.09

Outside My Window…is me.  I’m sitting outside again this morning.  At 8:30, it is 74 degrees, but it is humid.  There is a slight breeze so that makes it better.  Mostly sunny, with some random clouds floating overhead and blocking the sun momentarily.   I have had my run…I can do 2.25 miles in about a half an hour now so I have decided I can run 3 miles on the weekends ~ after today.  The weekly morning runs, well their length depends on what time I roll out of bed. 🙂 I am thinking…about entering my first bee data on The Great Sunflower Project web site later today.  Yup, I…
