    Outside My Window ~ 10.30.2011

Outside my window…is a cold, dark night.  We have weathered through our first big nor’easter of the season ~ nope, no snow for us ~ just rain , wind and not problems.  It did get cold last night with a low of 38°F…tonight’s forecast is at 37°F.  Currently we are at 41°F and the winds are calm.  Tomorrow is calling for partly cloudy with a high of 58°F.  We will warm gradually throughout the week up to the mid 60’s by next weekend.  The leaves are beginning to turn nicely in the area…I’m thinking I will make another trip to Lake Matoaka on campus to see if I can get…

    TWO WEEKS!

Let the fun begin……TWO WEEKS!   I’m so ready for this!  The image above is from a rare Christmas Day snow, 1966.  Don’t you love the Christmas decorations strung across the road in the downtown area.  They don’t do that any more…..not in this city anyway.  I wonder if they do it in small cities still?  We probably won’t have a white Christmas this year.  Snow is in the forecast for this evening…we are having yet another coastal storm so there is plenty of rain.  I’m not sure if the snow will happen but it is chilly, and wet, so it probably will get a bit slick tonight.  There is one thing for…

    Outside My Window ~ 11.29.09

Outside My Window…is bright, blue, sun shiny skies.  The temperature this morning at 8:45 is 49F with very light winds.  The humidity is low ~ for us anyway ~ at 59%.  Any morning you wake up with no dew on the windshield, you know the humidity is low that morning.   Our forecast for today is  67F with partly cloudy skies.  With the exception of Wednesday and Friday, we have had pretty decent weather during my time off.   Rain showers are in the forecast for tomorrow.  I noticed our precipitation for the month of November is already at 11.19 inches……10 of which was received during Nor’Ida earlier this month.  It has been a soggy month. I…

    Outside My Window ~ 11.15.09

Outside My Window…is no wind and rain!  Yeah!  Fortunately, the low pressure system that caused us so many problems is well off the coast of North Carolina now.  I woke up early and saw some blue skies while the sun was rising, but clouds took over.  I just looked outside and it looks like that is attempting to burn off right now.  We are at 55F right now with about  87% humidity, but the best part….winds are non-existent!!  Our high is suppose to reach 72F today with partly cloudy skies.    We are still under a coastal flood watch until around 10 this morning.  I guess all the folks right on the coast…

    Final Update

The nor’Easter that has been named Nor’Ida is slowly moving away from the North Carolina coast.  The rain and winds have diminished quite a bit and are still impacting the Northeast but we are calm for the most part.  No howling winds, no torrential rains….it is quiet now but we are definitely wetter than we were three days ago.  I have discovered the unconfirmed rainfall total I posted yesterday was not the grand total….the final tally for Newport News was 10.01 inches of rain.  Only Virginia Beach received more rain at 10.25 inches.  Here are a few photos our local paper, The Daily Press, had online…… This photo was taken in Poquoson before the…

    Storm Update

We survived a rather wild day and night here in Southeast Virginia on Thursday…..some a little dryer than others.  There is massive flooding in my region and it is still raining, though not quite as hard as it was yesterday.  I have an unconfirmed total of 5.17 inches thus far in my city.  The winds have calmed down to 25mph sustained winds with only 35 to 40mph gusts.  I say only because some gusts last night were reaching 75mph.  I can’t remember when I have heard my windows rattle like they did yesterday.   After the sun went down, I actually got quite worried ~ I think as long as you can see what…

    Howling Winds & Pouring Rain

The forecast today is winds 25 to 40 mph…..gusts of over 60 mph.  It continues to rain….much harder now than it was yesterday.  Our rainfall total as of 7:30 this morning is 4.93 inches since this event started.  And the worst of the rain, wind and flooding is yet to come.  The forecasters are saying this is a storm of historic proportions for this area and that it is probably going to be worse than the Ash Wednesday storm of 1962 .  I’m feeling a bit anxious about the events yet to come. There are a couple of bridges and tunnels closed……if you aren’t familiar with our area, we have several bridge tunnels that…

    And So It Begins….

I took this image a few weeks ago before a nor’Easter came into our area.  This was the night before the rains came.  We have another one that has set up in our area…..actually I suppose it started sometime during the early morning hours.  It is around 3:00 pm now and it has been raining steadily since I got up at 5:30 this morning.  This is what I heard we can expect from this storm…….what was once Hurricane Ida is now located over Florida.  It will venture out into the Atlantic, where sitting off the coast is an area of low pressure which probably wouldn’t become anything to worry about on its own.  But it is expected…
